In addition to celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, the ‘great’ Motown Records will be celebrated by American Idol. American Idol is one of the most watched reality television shows, so to be honored on such a grand scale speaks volumes of the impact that Mr. Gordy and the hitmakers, singers and songwriters have on music in the past and present sense. We all either grew up listening to the soulful sounds of Detroit and even if you can’t recall hearing any of this timeless music, your favorite hip hop artist has sampled some of these great instrumentals, so whether you know it or not the “Motown” sound has had an impact on your life. Lately, I have not kept up with American Idol this season. At first I was excited but my excitement has sizzled and eventually lost interest. However, I will tune in this week to watch the contestants tackle songs made famous by The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson and more. As a special treat tune into the elimination special on Thursday and enjoy music from Smokey Robinson and Ruben Studdard. This is one week in American Idol that you don’t want to miss.
Do you think the American Idols will do Motown justice?
