The Year: 1997
The Group: Camp Lo
The Album: Uptown Saturday Night
The Song: Luchini aka This Is it
I first heard this song on the campus of MSU and it immediately became my jam. Even to this day, I listen to it from time to time. This perfect feel good anthem was all this college girl needed to get me to class each day. With it’s throwback album cover and 1980’s sample of “Adventures in the Land of Music” by Dynasty, Camp Lo not only made us enjoy their music but taught us about our history.
The title of their debut single “Coolie High” is a reference to the 1975 film Cooley High. The album cover was inspired by Ernie Barnes’ painting The Sugar Shack which was used as the cover of Marvin Gaye’s 1976 album I Want You and in the credits sequence of the 1970s sitcom Good Times. The music video for the album’s final single, “Black Nostaljack”, featured Jimmie Walker and Bern Nadette Stanis reprising their Good Times characters of J.J. and Thelma Evans.
12 years later, I now realize that the lyrics were not relative to my life but I like the song anyway so enjoy!
